On the way from Jerash to Petra I took the road along the Dead Sea. Its shore is the lowest land on Earth, more than 400 metres below sea level, and the water is so salty that no fish or plants can live in it.
Halfway down the shore, Wadi Mujib cuts through the mountains to the sea. Its Siq Trail follows the river upstream into a gorge a few metres wide: you wade, scramble over boulders and pull yourself up ropes, in a life jacket, until the canyon ends at a waterfall.
