Abu Simbel is four 20-metre statues of Ramesses II cut into a mountain, near the border with Sudan. In the 1960s the whole temple was cut into blocks and moved 65 metres up the hill to save it from Lake Nasser. Inside, the halls run deep into the rock, lined with carvings of battles and gods.
